A few interesting things. 🧠
Building Better Cities Podcast: Lauren is this week’s guest on the recently launched Building Better Cities Podcast, hosted by Dr. Kate Gasparro. Electrification: Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) just released a new guidebook and planning tool for transit agencies seeking to electrify their fleets. Check out the guidebook (warning: large PDF) and planning tool.
MBTA Milestone: For the first time in fifteen years, the MBTA Orange Line is running at full speed! The agency has successfully executed an all-hands effort to eliminate slow zones across its rail system - centered around a policy shift from primarily conducting track work on nights and weekends to instituting multi-day (and even multi-week) shutdowns. This approach greatly accelerated the pace of maintenance work, as crews no longer had to spend hours moving equipment in and out of the system each night. But it also presented a ton of challenges, including requiring the MBTA to spin up a massive bus shuttle operation for every shutdown. Lots to learn here for other legacy rail operators!
